What to wear out at night in ny?

Dear Ms. NY $pender,
I am due to travel to NYC in December for a period of 4-5 weeks. I want to embrace the NYC experience and for a moment blend in like a local. I am hoping to do a lot of sight seeing during the day and be seen out on the town during the night. I am a little worried about what to wear when out at night and would like some pointers on what the beautiful New York girls wear in winter when out at clubs and bars. I've just turned 27 and and I am your average happy go lucky, a little on the conservative side kind of girl.
Kind Regards,

Dear Agnes,

December can be a pretty cold month in New York, and considering that November has been on the cold side, we can be pretty sure that it will only get colder.

With that said, let's get started:

New York has a lot of outdoor attractions, and even with some indoor ones, you will have to spend some time outside before you finally get in: the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Ground Zero, the Brooklyn Bridge... so for these day trips I recommend bundling up. It really doesn't matter what you wear underneath, jeans and a sweater will do just fine, just make sure you have a nice heavy coat that will keep you warm during the many hours you will spend out in the cold. Boots are still pretty hot this season, but if you want to be comfortable wear sneakers: the streets of New York can be pretty tough on your feet.

Night Life
This is when New Yorkers seem to forget that it's 20 degrees outside. No matter how cold it is, girls out clubbing or bar hopping always want to look sexy. Many times, out during a cold winter night, I've ended up being the only one in the room (bar, restaurant, etc.) wearing cashmere. I can't help it: if I see snow out my window I'll wear wool! But everyone else here loves to show some skin...

So, once again, have a warm (and maybe elegant, depending on the occasion) coat so that you can wear lighter clothing underneath.

When going out at night, I suggest you take a taxi to the place so that you don't spend too much time outside. The good news is that everywhere you go, it will be warm inside.

As for outfits choices, here are some examples of what you could wear:

At a fancy uptown bar:

At a chic downtown bar:

At a cool downtown club:

At a fun uptown club:

At a sexy downtown bar:

At any other "regular" bar:

I hope you have a great time here in NY! :)
