maybe coach is not the ideal diaper bag afterall...

It was a sunny day in New York today. And I made an effort to get out of the office during my lunch hour, to take a nice walk while I still can!

At first my plan was to buy lunch and enjoy a little sun, but then the "Coach" store thought popped in my head.

See, the store is not that close to my office, and considering I now weight at least 20 lbs more, going for a long walk is never something I look forward to. So I started the journey with no expectations: if I got too tired on the way there, I would just turn around and go back to the office.

It goes without saying that I made it there! Amazing the motivation I get from shopping...

So finally at the store, I first looked at the bag I was considering as a diaper bag:

The Parker Op Art in pink is just as adorable in person as it is on screen! It's a nice size bag and it fits comfortably on your shoulder. The pink color is a very soft shade of it, and the handle is so soft!

So while I loved the bag as a bag, I started having doubts about using it as a diaper bag. I could only imagine the soft pink getting splashed with soft puke from the baby, and that would really make me sad...

I gave myself permission to look around the store, for something more puke appropriate, and realized that another collection had better suited bags, the Leah collection:

I seriously considered buying this Coated Canvas Leah Tote. For the same price as the Parker Op Art, the Leah looks more like a diaper bag, and it's made of coated canvas, which means it's still not machine washable, but at least it could repel some puke on its own. It also has a long strap perfect to leave you hands-free to handle the baby.

But after much thinking, I figured I didn't love the Leah. I much preferred the Leah in Patent pink, but now the price would shoot up another $100.

So I went back looking at the Parker, and decided that I was going to listen to my readers, and not buy an expensive diaper bag!

Instead I bought a regular bag! The Parker Op Art in Tan. This way I can wear it before and after the baby is born! Isn't it gorgeous!?! ;)

Of course, now I still need a diaper bag...

would you buy this jewelry?

You know financial times are hard when jewelry stores start aggressively advertising their

DIAMOND & SILVER

collections!

1/3 CT. T.W. Diamond Circle Patchwork Star Earrings in Sterling Silver $152 (Zales)

But don't worry: they still offer white gold, except now you lose the diamonds!

Diamond Fascination™ 14K White Gold 4-Row Small Hoop Earrings $99 (still Zales)

For your information: Diamond Fascination™ is a patent handmade process which crystallizes diamond dust into enamel to simulate round-cut diamonds.

I guess diamond dust is still better than nothing!

I am not trying to knock Zales' creative ways to stay in business during bad economic times, I just find it a bit sad... and scary (can you imagine a diamond fascination engagement ring?!?!).

warming up to gladiator sandals

While I still think these flat gladiator sandals are hideous

and absolutely non flattering, and ugly...

I am starting to warm up to them when they come with a little (!) heel...

And while I still don't like these...

These I think I can work with!

Shoes store these days are filled with these gladiator and strappy sandals, so much so that even if you didn't like them before, the continuous exposure will brainwash you to the point of wanting a pair! Trust me, I speak from experience!

Hmm...

Hmm...

Because I would have never liked something like this in the past.

And now, instead, when they add a little wedge, I can almost think they're beautiful!

I even like them with animal prints!

And for some weird reason, I think these ones are my favorite so far.

So there you have it! Consider yourself brainwashed!

Pay attention next time you're in a shoe store, and let me know if you didn't think about buying one of these guys..

thinking about summer

Just looking at these colorful accessories I feel:

Happy

Playful

Twenty years younger...

You can find them at Solange Imports.

I think I must have owned something similar to these earrings way back when, because they look so familiar and they make me pleasantly nostalgic. And I want a pair so bad.

Of course, not everybody is going to feel the same way.

And that's the cool thing about fashion: it's not just about the piece itself, so many times it's about what it does to you.

Sometimes the colors will make you happy. Sometimes the texture against your body feels great. Sometimes the fit will be just perfect for you. And sometimes there will be memories attached to a piece.

I think all of these pieces have summer written all over them.

Perfect for a day at the beach.

Plus, they are super affordable, so you will have some money left for these:

Slim Havaianas

fashion disaster - metallic pink high tops???

You girls know that I love the color pink, but even I don't own a pair of metallic pink high tops!

But let's say you own a pair of metallic pink high tops... there are a few things you should be aware of, like the right time to wear them and the right time to leave them home.

You leave them home:

a) When you're over 50.

b) When you are wearing thick leggings with a skirt (enough 80s going on already).

c) When you are already wearing an eye-catching accessory like a metallic silver handbag.

I mean, how much attention do you need?!?!

looking for a diaper bag

Not too long ago I wrote a post about being a "fashionable new mommy" in honor of one of my pregnant reader.

One exact month after that post, I discovered I was pregnant! Talk about easily impressionable!

Being in my sixth month, I thought it was time I started my quest for a good looking diaper bag. It's funny how I already have a baby registry at Babies r Us, but I didn't include a diaper bag in it because I just didn't like their selection, and I rather pick that special bag myself.

There are two completely different directions I am being pulled when trying to pick this diaper bag: one is the fashionable direction, the other one is the adorable direction. For the adorable section:

Snoopy Pink Diaper Bag $19.99

How is this for adorable?

And can you beat that price???

Snoopy Blue Diaper Bag $25.00

I actually really liked this Snoopy model here, but since I'm expecting a little girl, there is no way I would buy a blue diaper bag... I'm traditional like that... ;)

Precious Moments Pink Diaper Bag $24.95

Being a bit of a Precious Moment fan, I was very happy to find that they make a diaper bag in pink and that looks totally cute.

And once again, the price is extremely affordable.

Vera Bradley Baby Bag $97

Moving away from the extremely adorable towards something a bit more grown-up, here is one of Vera Bradley's baby bags.

I love this one in the "Hope Garden" pattern.

And from their website, here is a more detailed description of the bag:

"It has a total of 11 pockets inside and out, including a full zippered back, and holds everything from bottles to extra clothes. We've added a special clip for disappearing pacifiers and lined the interior for easy cleaning. Also includes a 26" x 14" terry-covered changing pad with coordinating trim."

Juicy Couture Daydreamer Tote $198.00

On to Juicy, as you can see, and as expected the price is starting to get quite expensive, but now we are talking about designer bags!

Although this is not a diaper bag, I do think it would work just fine. And it's pink!

Juicy Couture Daisy-Print Velour Day Dreamer $228.00

Here is something different! It's not pink but it really inspires me as a summer time diaper bag.

It's a fun and happy bag that would look great hanging from a stroller.

I very much prefer it to the previous Juicy bag.

Coach Heritage Stripe Tote $298.00

You didn't think that Coach wasn't going to make the cut, did you???

There are actually a few Coach handbags pretty in pink, even if I am not sure they would be very practical as diaper bags.

True story: I was in a Coach store about 3 weeks ago, and I was already showing, so as soon as I walked in and started looking around, the sales girl asked me: "looking for the diaper bag?"

I was and I wasn't, but I said: "Sure, do you have one?"

So she brings me over the bag, and it was pink, and I pick it up and I looked inside at the pretty pink changing pad. It was so pretty and so silky, I couldn't help myself so I said to her: "I can just imagine this delicate and pretty pink pad getting soiled with poop!"

She laughed and so did I. Then she told me: "In all honesty, you don't need this bag. You should get a backpack or something more practical".

She was also tacitly implying that I didn't need to spend $400 on a diaper bag.

I agreed with her and thanked her for her advice.

That's why if I would ever get a Coach bag to use as a diaper bag, I would actually pick a bag that wasn't specifically a diaper bag, but something that I could continue wearing after diaper season is over, too. Like the Madison handbag from this older post.

Or this Parker Op Art Shoulder Bag $298.00,

that is quickly becoming my new favorite!

creative cups

Last night Adelphi University held a thought-provoking art exhibition fundraising event to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

The Creative Cups campaign featured more than 200 decorated bras to be auctioned off. You can still take a look at some of them on this 1010 wins page and pick one that best represents you. :)

Although many would imagine I would/should pick this one:

I would much more prefer wearing something like this!

What about you? What is your bra personality?

the bold look of spring

Spring is almost here, and after so many tan or black trench coats, we can finally buy some colored ones!

If you are itching for color, I say go for it now, because we've had a pretty good run of color that I am afraid we'll be reverting to neutrals pretty soon.

I understand that you don't wear colors just because they are in style, but there is no better time than now to buy a yellow or green coat and save it for the future. You know, when every store's window will be displaying tan trenches once again.

So leave your hesitations at the door, and be bold this spring! :)

spot the old navy modelquins

I'm sure you have all seen Old Navy commercials on TV. They have always been a little crazy and wild, sometimes funny and sometimes silly.

The new spring advertising campaign features not people but dolls, better known as "Modelquins". These guys right here:

Now, I've never been a fan of mannequins (read: afraid of), especially the ones that try to look very human, and I like to blame the Twilight Zone for it.

But as long as these mannequins stay on TV I'm ok.

The problem is that now they are wandering the streets of New York! Seriously!

Old Navy is challenging you to "Spot the Modelquins". They will be in five secret locations across New York City, today from 1 PM to 5 PM. If you find them you get to hang out and take pictures with them! And you also get a 20% off coupon.

If you find all five locations, you will get a coupon for a free pair of Old Navy jeans. :)

Now you know that I'm going to be watching my back until 5PM, because if one of these guys pops up out of nowhere in front of me, I'm totally losing my cool!

are you loyal to any beauty products?

My friend Mannequin wrote to me yesterday:

"I have NO beauty products (including shampoo) that I am completely loyal to and I wonder, have I just not happened upon the right products? What about YOU? Have you any loyalties to ANY product? I mean, changes are great when we're talking beauty products, but I know a few women that use the same brand names regardless. They are so loyal that they just change WITH the product. Or not. Loyalty does not seem to be prevalent when talking make up and personal care products, does it?"

I have been thinking about this question all day, and I decided that instead of replying just to Mannequin, I would share my opinion with everybody here on the blog.

I'll start off by saying that I don't have a straight yes or no answer, because I believe there are many different factors that need to be considered when talking about beauty products loyalty.

First of all, I have to say that I would love to find the perfect beauty products and to just stick to them.

At the same time, I am not sure if I am capable of doing so.

What I mean is that I feel that even after finding a great product, I would still keep looking for something better.

And this is where I believe "personality" plays a part in loyalty.

There are people that, like me, are not easily satisfied and that think that there is always something better out there, and it's just a matter of looking for it.

But of course, as soon as I find something better, I pat myself in the back (good job!), and quickly start looking for something even better! You get the idea...

To use an example, I love Narciso Rodriguez "for her" perfume: it smells great and it could pretty much be the perfume for me, the one I could be loyal to forever (I always wanted to have a signature scent.)

Yet, whenever I'm near a perfume counter, I will smell any new perfumes in front of me!

Why?!?!

Curiosity. But also as a reassurance that these perfumes are not "better" than my Rodriguez.

Or, to see if one of these perfumes could be even "better" than my Rodriguez, and if that were the case, I know I would buy it immediately and make it my new "favorite".

So the infinite search for an undefined pleasure continues forever...

Another reason why I keep smelling, even though I have a winner at home, is because of the fact that after a while the new inevitably gets old. Our bodies and senses are always invigorated by something "new".

And, at least in my case, there is also the fun factor of the search itself.

To recap, so far we have seen the "never settle" personality, the "the new is better than the old" personality and the "excitement of the chase" personality.

At the same time I am sure that there are plenty of "find comfort in the familiar" personalities, and maybe these are those few women that Mannequin was talking about, women that are able to be loyal to one product.

And maybe the women that are able to stick to the one product are also women that never change their hairstyles, that don't rearrange the furniture in the living room every six months but are perfectly happy with the same decor for decades, and that have been going to the same restaurant for years and years. And there is nothing wrong with that. It's just different personalities.

One last factor that probably plays a part in sticking to a product or not, is the loss of the initial efficacy after prolonged use.

After using the same product for months and years, what sometime happens is a change in performance of the product.

A cleanser starts leaving a film on your skin, your shampoo starts drying your hair, your deodorant doesn't work as well anymore, your perfume smells different on contact with your skin...

Whatever the reason for these changes, the solution is usually the same: a change of product.

Mannequin mentioned shampoos.

I thought I had found the perfect shampoo in the Kerastase line. I loved the smell and I loved what it did to my hair. Unfortunately after prolonged use, the results weren't the same anymore, as if a spell had been broken.

I don't know the reason why, I just know that after about 6 months or so, my hair felt limp and weighed down by the same product that once made it look voluminous and shiny.

And that's a good enough reason for me to move on to the next product.

Maybe our skin and our hair get used to these products and don't react to them like they used to in the beginning. Maybe it's even an allergic reaction to a constant exposure to the same ingredients. Who knows?

One solution is to find a few great products and to rotate their use, not giving our bodies time to react negatively to them.

Or maybe the solution is to learn to be a little more content with what the beauty counter has to offer us and to stop looking for "miracle products".

What do you think?
