i need fancier t-shirts, but they don't exist

I've realized that unless I am going to some special engagement, come spring and summer days I wear a lot of t-shirts. I have many t-shirts, in all different colors, and as it always happens with clothes, some of them I wear constantly, while others just sit in the drawer. But this is not the issue with the t-shirts...

The problem I'm having right now is that I'm getting bored even with my favorite t-shirts. They've started to look plain and boring, and I'm craving some "unique" t-shirts, some interesting ones.

A t-shirt that is more than a t-shirt. A t-shirt that is not just a plain old t-shirt. But the question is "is there such a t-shirt?" Is it really possible to fancy-up a t-shirt?

I have some Old Navy t-shirts that I mostly wear to bed. Or around the house.

They are decent t-shirts, of decent quality, but they are your most basic t-shirts, with no aspiration and no potential (to be fancy).

I have some Junk Food t-shirts that I love, but that will never make the cut for fancy-wear.

I have some concert t-shirts that are the perfect combination of great memento and horrible quality. I rarely wear them (I should probably frame them and just hang them up).

Finally, I have some vacation-souvenir t-shirts that are a far cry from fancy.

Sure, you can buy a designer t-shirt, but it's still is a regular t-shirt and the printed logo will make your cost go up to $200. So you wouldn't be buying a fancy t-shirt, you would only get robbed, for "still a cotton t-shirt".

A t-shirt has so little chance of becoming fancy.

None of the higher end department stores even have a "t-shirt" category in their websites. It would be embarrassing. They only sell tops and blouses.

You have to shop at stores for the young ones to find a "tees" category on their websites: Urban Outfitters, Free People, Lucky Brand and the likes...

But what does it mean? That after you turn 25 you shouldn't wear t-shirts anymore? Am I only allowed to buy blouses now?

Even Ann Taylor doesn't really sell t-shirts, but has plenty of blouses, and get this... tank tops!

We are at the point where tank tops are considered fancier than t-shirts. You see, a tank top has been given the chance to become fancy... It hardly seems fair.

What do you think?

if you need a hairdresser in brooklyn...

I've been meaning to blog about the great haircut & color I got about two months ago at The Bodhi Salon, right here in Brooklyn.

I had read great reviews about Bodhi on the Internet and I was thinking about trying a new place, so I gave it a try, and boy am I glad I did!

See, there are at least four different hair salons around my house, and with a small baby you are tempted to just go around the corner and get a quick haircut, no matter how good or bad it looks. And when Kaitlin was only few months old I did just that. And the cut sucked.

Now that my baby is growing and can come along on these beauty trips, I am being, once again, pickier about my choices.

When I went to Bodhi I was prepared: I wanted my hair to be a bit lighter for the summer and I wanted Adeline to color it, because I had read she was great. If I also decided to cut an inch or two off, I was going to ask for Jean-Marc, Adeline's husband and cutting expert.

The best thing I loved about the experience was that Adeline was not afraid to give out suggestions, like "don't do all-over color, let's just do highlights, so it'll look lighter but you won't need to come back for your roots right away". Absolutely right! I took her advice, and two months later the hair still looks good, if not better.

I say better because Adeline also suggested to cut off all the wispy layers I had on my ends, to make my fine hair look fuller, and while I couldn't get Jean-Marc (I didn't book him in advance), the girl that cut my hair (I'm sorry, I can't remember her name right now, but I'll update this post once it comes back to me) did a great job! And I mean perfect! My hair has grown beautifully with the cut. Take a look for yourself.

One of the best thing about finding hair expertise you can trust (and at the right price) is that it gives you the confidence to try out different things without having to worry if they're going to screw it up (and ruin your hair), and I am already wondering what should I try next: lighter shades for my highlights, red hair or something even wilder, like a bleached strand of hair.

And I know that Adeline won't be shy about telling me "no girl, that will look horrible on you!". You gotta love a competent and honest haircolorist!

Bodhi is located in Brooklyn @ 6806 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

fashion disaster: if it rains... wear flip flops?

Yesterday it rained cats and dogs here in New York. The streets were filled with people wearing rain coats and rain boots. Except for this guy, he just couldn't be like everyone else!

I also hear he likes to wear his rain boots to the beach...

it's time to buy a new watch

It's funny how when I first like something (expensive) I usually don't buy it right away, but I wait for the second time around to spring into action.

I guess it's a (financially) protective instinct, that makes sure I really like the item before I spend so much money on it.

Way back in November 2008 I wrote about White Ceramic Watches, and at that time I already loved them, or at least I loved the Chanel one, except that I had no intention (nor the funds) to spend $4,500 for one.

Then, for more than a year, I forgot about ceramic watches, until last week, when I watched the movie "The Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock, and BAM! Now I want a ceramic watch again, and this time badly!

The Blind Side is a captivating movie, and Sandra Bullock really deserved her oscar for great acting. But aside from the story and the emotional content, if you are interested in fashion, you cannot help yourself but admire Sandra's style and wardrobe the whole time you're watching the movie.

She was classy and elegant and beautiful all the time. And she kept flashing that white ceramic watch in every scene! I don't think she ever took it off!

And as soon as my brain would forget about it for a second, here would come the next scene with Sandra pairing the watch with another winning outfit!

So I started researching this watch, thinking that it must be yet again a ceramic Chanel, but I was very happy to find out that it wasn't! I also didn't have to research for too long, because if you Google "Sandra Bullock's watch in the blind side" you will see how many other women have fallen in love with it while watching the movie.

Fortunately, this watch is much more affordable than a Chanel: it's a Toy Watch Plasteramic

The story behind it is that Sandra Bullock wanted to be true to her character, and Leigh Ann Tuohy always wore a ToyWatch (which is wild, because if I had the Tuohy's money I would be wearing the Chanel!).

So, while I am ready to shell out the $295 for the ToyWatch (or $195 for a Mini White Plasteramic), my frugal side made me look around to see if, since the 2008 post about ceramic watches, they have come up with other "ceramic-looking" watches that don't cost more than $100.

The best I was able to find is a Fossil watch.

Women's White Resin Strap on sale at Macy's for $85.

Since I am not going to buy real ceramic, at this point it doesn't matter anymore if it's rubber, resin or plasteramic, as long as it looks good on my wrist!

There are people out there that value watches and are willing to spend little fortunes on them. As I've said before on this blog, I am a Swatch watch kind of girl, so while I would love to own a Cartier and a Rolex and a Chanel, not having them doesn't bother me in the least (the same can't be said about me and handbags...).

A watch is an accessory and usually something I grow tired of after a while, so it is wise for me not to spend a lot of money for one, except that I've been offered the option of receiving the ToyWatch as a Mother's Day gift, so I think I might end up with one, after all, yay! :)

If you have a minute, stop by and check out all the cool ToyWatches, and you'll fall in love not just with the White Plasteramic one, but also with the Neon and the Fluo, so perfect for Summer!
