Wedding Planning: The Draft Plan

One of the main goals I have for this wedding is to keep its costs very conservative. And by that I mean it shouldn't cost more than ten thousand dollars (and that's a big number).

I understand that to some people that number doesn't begin to cover the dress, but I am not one of those people.

I am, before anything else, a mother.

And since becoming a mother, spending money on myself has lost a lot of the appeal that it used to have. Now instead, I love spending money on my baby! I find I get a lot more satisfaction (and happiness) from buying some crayons that I know she loves, than buying, say, makeup for myself. So I can't justify spending sooo much money that could be saved for her college fund, and for anything else she might need.

With that said, I don't mean to knock down anybody that wants to have a lavish wedding; if I had tons of money I would have a nice beach wedding in Hawaii and fly everyone there on my private jet. But, since we are still nowhere close to rich (and I don't believe in going into debt because of a wedding), we will probably have the wedding here in New York, probably somewhere in Staten Island or anywhere I can find some sand and "cleanish" ocean water...

So this is the part where I make you laugh, by showing you some tentative numbers, and for all of you that have been there before, feel free to chime in and let me know if I am being unrealistic.

Dress: anywhere from $200 to $1,000.
(Worse comes to worse: David's Bridal)

Flower Girl Dress  :) $200

Restaurant Reception: $3,000
(No idea where yet, we might end up at TGIF  ;)

Cake: $500
(If they want more, I'll bake it myself)

Flowers: $1,000

Photographer: $1,000
(Or some friends that can use a camera)

Invitation Cards: $200
(I only need like 20)

Favors: $200
(Not sure about this one... I hate useless favors)

Total: $7,000 or so.

I'm leaving room for extras (hairdresser, shoes, tuxedo for him... and other things I am not aware of right now), but I'm planning on going as low as I can on everything.

Another piece of info I forgot to share on my last post was that I know a seamstress that has offered to sew the dress for me, but I haven't had the chance to sit down and talk money with her yet. I'll need to have some pictures to show her before she can give me a price, of course.

Also there will be no more than 30 people, so... not many cards, not many favors and most importantly, not much food!

I actually think it could even cost less than that... yes, this is another reason why I am going to share all of the details and costs with you, to prove a point: you can have a nice wedding without having to spend top dollars - and it'll be like all of you are going to be part of it as well.  :)

And now, I have to find a way to look good in about 6 months! I need diet, exercise and extensions!!! ;P

This will be hard, but what you spend, Spender, will depend on your priorities. If funky snapshots are OK, then let a friend take them. If you need artful portraits recording the day, SPEND the MONEY for a professional!

If you are crafty and resourceful, you could do your own invitations and flowers for much, much less.

Make the rest of your decisions based on your own abilities and the time it would take for you vs professionals, as well as the results.

You still HAVE TGIF? I have been to receptions in church halls and catering banquet halls worse than that! I just tried to remember it was the gathering and sharing that was more important than the food and atmosphere!

Best, Soos

I keep chuckling at the change in you since the baby. They do turn your world upside down, don't they!

You can go to a handmade site like ArtFire and browse invitations or favors there - much less expensive.

I would also spring for a professional photographer, if you want your beautiful memories in print.

I applaud your decision to limit your spending. It's really gotten out of hand - and all for one day that is such a whirlwind you barely remember it! (that's why photos are a good idea, LOL) Good luck!

Thank you both, Soos and Maria, I will get the professional photographer, it makes sense.
And Maria, I'm glad I amuse you! ;P
But seriously, this is just a big party, isn't it? So I just have to remember to treat it as such...

Spender, I'm so proud of you for be pragmatic about the wedding and keeping perspective. David's Bridal carries beautiful dreeses without costing you an arm and a leg. With your sense of style, I am sure you can create a lovely wedding on the budget you have set.

Your transformation into motherhood is a marvel to behold.

I've got some good news of my own. My radiation treatments are complete. 7 weeks, 5 days a week. Nuked me half to death. By the last few weeks I was feeling sick from the accumulation of the radiation. Treatments are over, endless follow ups and 5 years of taking an anti-cancer drug will ensue. I plan to cool my heels for awhile.
